Subantarctic Islands

The Subantarctic Islands are just above the Antarctic, and all around the southern ocean. There are over 1000 Subantarctic Islands all owned by different places in the world. New Zealand owns 5. The Bounty Islands, The Snares, The Antipodes, Auckland Island and Campbell Island. The New Zealand Subantarctic Islands are protected nature reserves.

Do you know what the weather is like in the Subantarctic Islands? Well, you might think it's below 0 degrees all year long like Antarctica but it is actually 4 degrees on a cold day, and 16 degrees on a hot day. It is always nearly cloudy, but the weather is always changing. It could be hailing one minute and the next you could be blown off the island. Despite all of the crazy weather, the animals have adapted well.

How many animals do you think live on the Subantarctic Islands? Well, there is actually quite a lot of animals on the Subantarctic Islands. All of these animals are endemic to only one or two islands. For example, there are four types of penguins that live on the islands. Most are very sociable and live in large colonies. But there is one penguin that likes to be alone, roosts in bushes and makes loud noises when something approaches. This is called the Hoiho.

Have you ever looked closely at a $5 note? Do you know what those flowers are with the penguin? These are called MegaHerbs. Megaherbs have big bright flowers, used to absorb the heat. When the megaherbs absorb the heat the bugs get attracted to the megaherbs to warm up but at the same time, they pollinate too.
